Alloy steel is steel that is alloyed with a variety of elements in total amounts between 1.0% and 50% by weight to improve its mechanical properties. There are generally two categories of alloy steel: low alloy and high alloy . Anything with less than an 8% alloying element is labelled as low alloy, anything over 8% is high alloy. Low alloy steels are by far the most common. Alloying different elements changes the properties of the steel pretty drastically.
Alloy steels contain alloying elements (e.g. manganese, silicon, nickel, titanium, copper, chromium, and aluminum) in varying proportions in order to manipulate the steel’s properties, such as its hardenability, corrosion resistance, strength, formability, weldability or ductility.
